BENDEN GÜÇLÜ

08.06.2018 – 09.07.2018

STRONGER THAN I AM
08.06.2018 – 09.07.2018
opening: 08.06.2018, friday 18:00

Siyah Beyaz Art Gallery will close off the season with a group exhibition. The group of five artists who came together for the first time will be presented to the viewers with ‘Benden Güçlü’ exhibition. The exhibition, which will take place as an expression of the pessimistic atmosphere of today’s oppression, uncertainty and hopelessness, can be seen in Siyah Beyaz Art Gallery between the dates 08.06 – 09.07.2018.

“Stronger Than Me” has been formed as a result of nearly two years of gathering, dialogue and idea sharing of Ozan Bilginer, Aslı Işıksal, Seval Şener, Havva Altun and Funda Susamoğlu who are from different art disciplines. In this exhibition “stronger than me” is conceived as a situation. It is the sum of the moments when we are caught unprepared, the mind pauses, one collides with the world that does not consist solely of him/her. This situation which rarely leads to good things, but mostly pushes us into the corner, forces each person to reposition itself like every unexpected event.

The practice of survival leads one to leave ourselves aside and drifts one into a “half-live” where the heroes have left the stage. The exhibition tries to make the situation more manageable when it becomes the scene of an individual collapse where the hunter becomes the prey, the plans collapse, and the impulses get ahead of the mind. We should keep in mind that strong or weak, we cannot stay in a single position, in the scene that we are witnessing all together.

The landscape you see when you look from a distance makes a natural disaster appear as you approach. Havva Altun’s multiple arrangements that she repeatedly re-painted a night, envisages our anticipation of disaster or miracle. Ozan Bilginer’s work that is open to interactions consist of images that show signs of life, which responds silently when you enter its field of motion. The stage that Funda Susamoğlu conceives around the question “dead or alive” consists of artificial leather objects, ceramic sculptures, and video installation. In her painting and sculpture arrangement, Aslı Işıksal examines the state of being suspended in space by combining the extreme point of movement with stability. Seval Sener’s archaic scales that sways in semi-dark with a delicate balance and the installation entitled “Until the Morning” that consists of the collapse of today’s uncanny virtual data keeps our minds suspended.
